Interfacing Between Different Hex Sizes

I'm really sick. Stuck inside. Bored.

If we assume that an adventuring day is like 8 hours, we can interface between four different hex sizes as requiring different binary fractions of the day. Below, 1 league equals 3 miles or 5 kilometers.

Terrain 1 league 2 leagues 4 leagues 8 leagues
Regular ⅛ day ¼ day ½ day 1 day
Difficult ¼ day ½ day 1 day 2 days

The length of an exploration turn would equal the time it would take to traverse one regular hex. This means, regardless of scale, difficult terrain has double the movement cost of regular terrain and always requires two turns to traverse.

Hourly time-tracking feels kind of appealing to me lately, for some reason, so I want to try using 1-league (3 mile) hexes sometime. At the same time, I don't want to assume I'll always want to use 1-league hexes. Hence the table.

  1. Hi! What a coincidence: I'm also, sick, stuck and bored.
I find the use of leagues instead of miles quite appealing, first and foremost because my gaming pals and I are europeans and so the Imperial system is, at best, a weird artifact we only use in D&D, and so we have a hard time making real world assumptions on the fly about what a certain number of feet "are". Not mind-numbingly hard, of course, but counterintuitive nonetheless. Leagues, on the other hand, sound equally archaic to us but, being basically "the distance a man on foot covers in an hour", it's easier to apply our hiking experience and so making informed decisions. The resizing of hexes in prewritten adventures may be a problem, of course, but honestly I feel like 6 mile hexes tend to cover too much ground for the little amount of landmarks they contain. Honestly, a little stroll on the wild or a good look into a topographic map shows you how much stuff would find accommodation inside one of those.
Anyhow, wish you a swiftly recover.

    1. hi rata, i'm so sorry i missed your comment earlier and i hope you're feeling better now!! i agree that 6 mile hexes feel a little bit too big, or at least they feel like an unhappy compromise between a more small-scale experience (walking through a forest) or a large-scale one (traveling between regions). also glad that you like the league unit!! i like it for the same reason, think i first saw it being used in harnmaster :) feels handwavey and in-world! same reason why i prefer "paces" over feet haha

      thank you!!
